ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In a game that went down to the final play, the No. 2 seeded George Washington University water polo team was held off by No. 3 Navy, 10-9, in the MAWPC Championship Semifinals.Â
GW and Navy played a tight first half as it was tied at 2-2 after the first quarter and only separated by one goal when the Midshipmen took a 4-3 lead into halftime. GW tied the game part-way through the third quarter, but a 3-0 Navy run to end the third put the Buff & Blue into an 8-5 hole heading into the final frame.
Looking to keep its championship hopes alive, GW battled hard in the fourth and eventually cut the deficit to one with just over a minute remaining. Then with 20 seconds remaining and still down a goal, the Revolutionaries, with possession, called timeout to pull their goalie and look for the equalizer, but a GW turnover was costly, giving Navy control and the ability to run the clock out.
As he did against Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinal round, Yam Kabakov led the Revolutionaries on offense, netting four goals. Andrija Sekulic and Adonis Vlassis each scored twice, while Leo Lueddemann added one goal.
GW moves on to play Wagner in tomorrow's MAWPC Championship third-place game at 12:00 p.m.
