After nearly six years as George Washington's Director of Athletics, more than three decades after she first stepped foot on campus for what would become a Hall of Fame career, Tanya Vogel decided to step away from the university in August. To honor the contributions that Vogel made to GW for almost the entirety of her adult life, the community came together to fund the Tanya Vogel Endowed Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be given annually to a GW student-athlete.
Vogel's journey at GW started when she became a student-athlete, joining the women's soccer team in 1992. Afterwards, while coaching the team she once was a part of, she earned multiple advanced degrees from the university. Vogel earned her B.S., M.S. and M.B.A in Foggy Bottom, while also holding various leadership roles within the university's Department of Athletics. She was the first women's soccer player to be inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.
The endowment fund was created in August of 2024 and has already raised more than $100,000. The money raised will support a student-athlete's GW journey by providing them with a scholarship.
Under Vogel's tenure leading the Athletics Department, the university's teams and student-athletes thrived. The department captured 19 Atlantic 10 Championships and its students earned better than a cume 3.25 GPA each semester. They also exceeded the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate by four percentage points, with a 94 GSR in 2023.
Vogel has captured the hearts, minds and talents of everyone she came across with her extraordinary ability to cultivate a culture of excellence, through determination, commitment and respect.
GW's facilities also continued to advance under her watch. The baseball program installed a new video board at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, along with opening the Fassnacht Clubhouse. The softball program added lights to enhance the stadium experience. The upper and lower bowls of the Charles E. Smith Center were enhanced and The Tin Tabernacle Club was renovated, among other upgrades in the university's largest venue.
Development also surged with Vogel at the helm, setting an all-time high in donor numbers with more than 2,300 making a gift last year. GW Athletics was also one of the top-ranking units in the university's Giving Day.
Following Vogel's leadership, GW Athletics remains in an elite category of departments around the country that are able to combine a world-class education with world-class athletics.
Please consider donating to the Tanya Vogel Endowed Scholarship Fund to continue to support GW student-athletes in the classroom and in competition.
