On Wednesday night at halftime of the GW women's basketball game vs. Rhode Island, GW student-athletes who qualified for Athletics' Dean's List were honored. Athletics Director Tanya Vogel and Faculty Athletics Representative Bev Westerman celebrated student-athletes who earned a 3.0 or better GPA in the spring or fall of 2023.
Of the nearly 400 student-athletes competing for the university's 20 varsity teams, 78% earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher last semester, as the department achieved a cume 3.35 GPA in the fall, as GW's first-year class adjusted to the academic priorities of the university. As impressively, nearly half of GW's student-athletes (49%) earned a 3.5+ GPA last semester.
Under the guidance of Assistant Athletics Director James Hellekjaer, teamed with Stephen McNamara, Natalie Ellard, Joe Strickland, Leah Fishman and Tierra Porter, the department flourished while exceeding the expectations of GW's distinguished faculty.
Remarkably, 48 student-athletes notched a perfect 4.0 in the spring of 2023, while 37 hit the mark in the fall, with 16 accomplishing the feat both times: Grace Allread (volleyball), Demi Amigun (men's soccer), Patrick Castellanos (men's cross country/track), Annalisa Fratantoni (rowing), Anna Golbus (rowing), Kylie Kazmierski (gymnastics), Markella Lanara (volleyball), Payton Lynch (gymnastics), Alexia Massoud (women's cross country/track), Tim Neumann (men's soccer), Olivia Paquette (women's swimming & diving), Keira Porter (women's swimming & diving), Elizabeth Price (rowing), Anneliese Silverman (gymnastics), Alexa Williams (softball) and Marlee York (gymnastics).
Also on Wednesday night, Dr. Dennis Schell was awarded this year's Student-Athletes' Choice for Professor of the Year. He was selected amongst an esteemed group of nominees that included Dr. Johan Ferreira, Dr. Irene Foster, Meredith Geisler, Dr. Michael Moses and Dr. Kylie Quave.
