Women’s Soccer Fends off UMBC for 2-0 Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – Behind second-half goals from sophomore Isabel Kelly and junior Kelly Poole, the George Washington women's soccer team picked up a resilient 2-0 road win against UMBC on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 51st Minute: Kelly put GW on the scoreboard early in the second half off a penalty kick that rocketed past the goalkeeper. The goal is Kelly's second of the season and marked the first penalty kick for GW this year.
- 80th Minute: Poole put the nail in the coffin late in the second half after scoring a breakaway goal to double GW's lead. Poole snuck past the UMBC back line and was led perfectly with a lofting pass from sophomore Aoi Kataoka to create the one-on-one opportunity. The assist is Kataoka's third of the year, while the goal is Poole's first of the season.
NOTEWORTHY
- The match marked the third time the two programs have met. GW now holds a record of 2-0-1 over the Retrievers.
- Sitting at 3-1-1, the Revolutionaries are off to their best start through five games since 2018.
- GW finished with a slight 18-16 edge in total shots, while both teams finished with an even eight shots on goal.
- Graduate student Rose Hemans tallied her first clean sheet of the season while also registering eight saves in net for the Revolutionaries. The shutout marks the first clean sheet in Hemans' collegiate career.
- UMBC finished with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Junior Lauren Prentice was issued a yellow card in the 28th minute. Three different Retrievers received a yellow card as well.
- GW's stout defense has only allowed two goals in the past 270 minutes of action.
