GW picks up a gritty 2-1 win at UNC Greensboro.
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team put together a gritty performance en route to tallying a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro. Sophomores Aoi Kataoka and Isabel Kelly each tallied their first goal of the season to fuel GW to victory and move to 2-1 on the year.

WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team put together a gritty performance en route to tallying a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro. Sophomores Aoi Kataoka and Isabel Kelly each tallied their first goal of the season to fuel GW to victory and move to 2-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 12th Minute: Kataoka got GW on the board first after intercepting a pass on UNC Greensboro's backline. Kataoka swiped the ball and beat the goalie in a one-one-one opportunity to put GW on top early.
- 56th Minute: Kelly doubled GW's lead early in the second half with a tap-in goal past the goalkeeper. Kelly's goal is the first of her collegiate career and came off a sweeping cross from first-year Charlotte Li. The assist is Li's first of the season.
- 68th Minute: UNCG tallied their lone goal of the match off a shot from Mel Herrera. Assisting on the play was Bailey Gourdine.
NOTEWORTHY
- The match marked only the second meeting in history between the two programs, with GW earning its first-ever win over the Spartans. The first matchup between the two schools came in 2021 and ended in a 1-1 draw.
- Kataoka and Kelly each tallied their first goals of the season to give GW the victory. Kelly's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
- Li tallied her first collegiate assist in the match. Li's assist came in the 56th minute when she set up Kelly for GW's second goal of the day.
- UNC Greensboro finished with a 13-5 edge in shots and tallied a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal as well.
- Graduate goalkeeper Rose Hemans registered six saves in net for GW.
- UNCG also finished with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks over the Revolutionaries.
- GW's Avril Silva and Maggie Mockenhaupt each received one yellow card.
