Women’s Soccer Back in Action Sunday at UNC Greensboro

WASHINGTON – Following a week-long break from action, the George Washington women's soccer team returns to the pitch this Sunday when they travel to take on UNC Greensboro. Kickoff between the Buff & Blue and the Spartans is slated for 1 p.m. in Greensboro, NC.
OPENING WEEKEND
Last week, GW opened the regular season with a dominant 7-0 win over Delaware State. The offensive explosion marked the most goals in a single match for the program since the 2021 spring season when GW defeated Delaware State by an identical score of 7-0. GW saw six different players tally at least one goal in the match, with five players tallying the first goal of their collegiate careers. Highlighting the standout day was first-year Abby Caoile who notched two goals against the Hornets. Both of Caoile's goals came in the second half of the match, putting the finishing touches on a dominating win over the Hornets. With the win, the Buff & Blue are now 9-0 all-time against Delaware State, dating back to their first matchup in 2008.
GW followed up their explosive season-opener with a 3-1 loss at Bucknell on Sunday. Bucknell, the reigning Patriot League Tournament Champions, tallied its first goal of the match in the 10th minute to grab the early momentum. Despite trailing for much of the match, GW showed fight until the very end, creating multiple chances on the offensive end which resulted in one goal from junior Caitlin Cunningham in the 86th minute. The goal was the first of Cunningham's collegiate career and gave GW positive momentum heading into a week of practice.

UNCG enters Sunday's match sitting at 1-2 overall after most recently dropping a 1-0 contest to High Point on Wednesday night. The Spartans, whose lone victory came in a 2-0 season-opening win over Army, are led by Ava Kiss who has one goal and one assist on the year. Kiss' goal came in the 43rd minute against Army, while her assist came just after halftime in the 48th minute of the same match. Since the win over Army, UNCG has failed to score another goal, dropping a 3-0 match at James Madison on Sunday and a 1-0 contest at home against High Point on Wednesday.
Prior to the 2023 season, the Spartans were picked to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll. UNCG picked up 67 points and one first-place vote, only trailing Samford who tallied 77 total points and the remaining seven first-place votes.
