DMV Product Garrett Johnson Joins Men's Basketball
Princeton transfer will have four years of eligibility for Buff & Blue
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball head coach Chris Caputo announced the signing of Oakton, Va., native Garrett Johnson on Monday. Johnson will have four years of eligibility at GW.
"We're super excited to have Garrett as a part of our program at GW," Caputo said. "He's an athletic wing that can impact winning in multiple ways on both ends of the floor. His ability to make shots at a high level combined with his play-making makes him a tough cover for opposing teams.
"Defensively his size and versatility allow him to switch and guard multiple positions. Being from the DMV, and coming from Princeton, he is an ideal fit for GW."
Johnson is a 2021 graduate of the Episcopal School in Oakton and began his college career at Princeton that fall. However, due to a rare benign tumor in his left hip, Johnson red-shirted the 2021-22 season and withdrew from school this past year.
After undergoing multiple unsuccessful surgeries, Johnson underwent chemotherapy, which began to show success in shrinking the tumor. He was cleared medically to resume basketball activities this winter and will begin his college basketball career in Foggy Bottom.
Johnson was a standout performer in high school, ranking as a three-star prospect and scoring over 1,000 points during his career. He was named the 2019 Concorde District Player of the Year and First Team All-Region while attending Oakton High School. He then transferred to Episcopal where he was First Team All-IAC and Second Team All-State in 2020.
He also made waves on the AAU scene during his prep career while competing for Team Takeover. Out of high school, he chose Princeton over Furman, Loyola-Chicago, Richmond, Xavier and Yale.
Johnson is the third transfer addition to the program, joining Benny Schröder, whose signing was announced in April, and Darren Buchanan, Jr., who committed earlier this month.
