Alumni and Partners Connect with GW Student-Athletes
GW Athletics recently hosted its annual Alumni-Athlete Networking Forum at The Tin Tabernacle Club inside the Charles E. Smith Center. More than 85 current student-athletes had the opportunity to listen to and network with professional leaders in various industries in a networking and mentorship event. The professionals and panelists in attendance were former GW students and student-athletes representing men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's cross country, men's and women's rowing, men's swimming and diving, gymnastics, lacrosse, softball and volleyball.
"This is such an incredible event where alumni share knowledge and insight with our current student-athletes, who benefit firsthand from learning about their experiences, and help build their professional networks and skills," noted Julia Browne, Associate Program Director, Career Competencies.
GW's Black Student-Athlete Alliance (BSAA) kicked off the evening meeting Black alumni and holding a candid discussion around what they can expect being former Black student-athletes entering corporate America. The annual forum event started with a keynote address from Lea Ann Thurman (BS '93), Director, Microsoft Global Strategic Alliance, SAGE Software. Lea Ann was a four-year letter winner on the GW women's soccer team. A networking session open to all student-athletes followed in a roundtable discussion format between current student-athletes and alumni.
Sophomore gymnast, Marlee York shared, "I enjoyed the opportunity to connect with alumni that have been in my shoes before. I walked away with new insight on graduate school and entering the workforce once my days as a student-athlete are over."
Companies and individuals who are interested in being a part of future GW Athletics career services initiatives and mentorship programs are invited to contact Lisa Dunn at 202-994-8355 or lisazdunn@gwu.edu.
