Sophomore sensation will compete in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke
WASHINGTON - GW swimming and diving sophomore Julia Knox has been selected to compete at the NCAA Championships after qualifying with a program-record swim (4:10.57) in the 400-yard IM at the Bulldog Invite Last Chance Meet. Knox will compete in three events at the Championships, which take place from March 15-18 at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
A native of Craigavon, Northern Ireland, Knox arrived in a big way onto the collegiate swimming scene. In her rookie season at GW, Knox was awarded A-10 All-Conference Second Team after medaling four times at the A-10 Championships. Knox set program records in both the 200- and 400-yard IMs, all while in her first go-around at the conference championship.
With a year's worth of experience under her belt, Knox came back as a sophomore and continued her rise. She had a team-high 53 points (tied with Phoebe Wright) at this year's A-10 Championships and did so while breaking program records in the 200- and 400-yard IMs and the 200-yard breaststroke. Knox is also the new owner of the A-10 record in the 200-yard IM (1:57.81) and the A-10 meet record in the 400-yard IM (4:11.44).
This marks the second consecutive year that GW swimming and diving has made it to the NCAA Championships, after Djurdje Matic did it last year. Knox will become GW women's swimming and diving's first representative at the national championships since Katura Horton-Perinchief went in 2005, and will be the first women's swimmer to go from GW since Bambi Bowman and Meghan Mitchell went in 1995.
