Duo collects weekly awards ahead of A-10 Championships
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore Moriah Freitas and graduate student Matthew Whelan have been named the A-10 Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. The awards come after monster performances at the Cavalier Invite, where the duo updated the Buff and Blue record book a total of four times.
Freitas, an Orlando, Fla. native, broke two minutes (1:59.97) in the 200-yard butterfly time trials, becoming one of only two Colonials to ever accomplish the feat. The following day, Freitas grabbed sixth (54.83) in the 100-yard butterfly prelims. The time was .06 better than her personal best, and she remains in fourth place in Buff and Blue history with the improved time.
Whelan found success in the same two events. He jumped into third (1:45.75) in GW history in the 200-yard butterfly time trials, before taking second place and becoming the fourth-fastest Colonial (47.60) ever in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Buff and Blue are gearing up for a run at the A-10 Championships, which begin on Wednesday, February 15.
