Swimming and Diving Grows Lead at A-10 Championships

GW breaks two A-10 records, five Buff and Blue records on Day Two
GENEVA, OHIO - Two conference records and five program records highlighted the night as GW swimming and diving extended its lead at the A-10 Championships. After two days of competition, both the men's and women's teams are comfortably in first place with 295 (men's) and 287 (women's) points.
Women's Highlights:

Julia Knox grabbed gold (1:57.81) while breaking the A-10 (1:57.89) and program (1:58.56) records in the 200-yard IM. Knox bested her own previous program record (1:59.20) twice today as she took first place in both the prelim and final.

Ava Topolewski took first place (4:46.99) and crushed the GW program record in the night's opening event, the 500-yard freestyle. Topolewski cleared the previous record (4:48.24), set by Bambi Bowman in the 1994-95 season, by over a full second. The swim was also good for fourth-fastest all-time in the A-10.Â

The women capped the night with another gold medal (1:31.53). Chloe Hernandez, Barbara Schaal, Phoebe Wright and Marlee Rickert swam the event for GW and were less than one second off the A-10 record (1:30.84).Â

Wright finished in third place (4:49.12) and took home a bronze medal in the 500-yard freestyle.Â

Hernandez nabbed a bronze medal (22.91) in the women's 50-yard freestyle, and set a new program record in the event while doing so, breaking Abigail Fusco's record (22.96) set back in 2018. Â
Men's Highlights:

In the final event of the night, the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, GW finished in first place (1:18.05) and broke another A-10 (1:18.48) and program (1:19.36) record. Matthew Whelan, Djurdje Matic, Dylan Koo and Ganesh Sivaramakrishnan swam the record-setting event for the Buff and Blue.

Marek Osina and Bode Ringenbach finished in first and second in the men's 200-yard IM. Osina took gold (1:44.91) and was less than 0.2 seconds off his own A-10 record (1:44.72), which he set at last year's A-10 Championships. Ringenbach took home the silver medal (1:46.50) and moved into third place all-time in program history.Â

Whelan and Matic were the only swimmers all day to clear 20 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, and they both did it in the prelims and finals of the event. Whelan finished in first place (19.74), while Matic took second and was less than a tenth of a second off Whelan's pace (19.81).Â

In the lone diving event of the day, Spencer Bystrom showed out with a second-place finish (302.80) - a personal best for the senior competing in his home state of Ohio.Â

Philip Moldovanu took third place (4:23.41) in the men's 500-yard freestyle.Â
