NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW men's basketball redshirt freshman Garrett Johnson was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The accolade continues a whirlwind beginning to the Oakton, Va., native's collegiate career. The mere sight of Johnson on the court was a victory in and of itself. Johnson missed the last two years due to a benign tumor in his left hip, undergoing four surgeries during his first year at Princeton, unenrolling and enduring nine chemotherapy treatments, the last of which came in April, before committing to GW.
The story gained local and national attention last week, with features from NBC 4, Sports Illustrated, ESPN and Field of 68, among others.
The recognition, though, was for his play on the court where Johnson averaged 18.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg while shooting 70.6% from the floor and 60% from beyond the arc in his first two games. He burst onto the scene on Monday vs. Stonehill, earning the start and tallying 21 points on the backs of five 3-pointers to go along with nine rebounds. He followed up on Saturday with 15 points and six rebounds in GW's victory over William & Mary.
Through the season's first week, Johnson leads the A-10 in field goal percentage, ranks third in 3-point percentage, is seventh in rebounding and ninth in scoring. He and the rest of the Revolutionaries return to the court on Tuesday night vs. Hofstra at 7 p.m.
