First-year swimmer wins second A-10 award of season
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - First-year swimmer Phoebe Wright has been named as the Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. The award comes after Wright went a perfect three-for-three in first-place finishes at Georgetown on Saturday.
Wright, a first-year from Cincinnati, Ohio, opened Saturday's meet by taking first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.16). She backed that up by taking first (2:01.90) in the 200-yard backstroke by over six seconds, and set a McCarthy Pool (Georgetown) record in the event. Wright added on to her impressive outing in the final race of the meet, helping the 400-yard freestyle relay to a first-place finish (3:32.52).
This is Wright's second A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week award of the season. The first came after the Big Al Invitational in December, when she took third (1:48.65) in the 200-yard freestyle A-final and seventh (55.33) in the 100-yard backstroke A-final, and contributed to high team relay finishes.
GW Swimming and Diving is off from competition until February 3-5, when the Buff and Blue will challenge the field at the Cavalier Invitational.
