
Pateros, Castorina Awarded Following Dominant Weekend

Water polo student-athletes recognized with GW Student-Athlete of the Week & MAWPC recognitions
WASHINGTON - GW water polo is off to its best start in program history, having won 10 games in a row, and 10 of its first 11. This past weekend, graduate transfer Theodoros Pateros and junior goalkeeper Luca Castorina were commanding in the pool. For their efforts, Pateros was named GW's Student-Athlete of the Week and MAWPC Player of the Week, while Castorina earned MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week recognition.Â
Pateros has continued on his blazing hot start to the season, erupting for 24 goals in GW's four games this past weekend. The Glyfada, Greece native has scored a team-leading 54 goals in 11 games and has scored a minimum of three goals in every contest for GW. On Saturday, Pateros scored a season-high seven goals against Mercyhurst.Â
Castroina earned MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week after a stellar weekend in net for the Buff and Blue. In four games, Castorina made 49 saves with a .605 save percentage. The keeper from Cantania dished out seven assists and had four steals while allowing just eight goals per game.Â
First-year Michael Wheeler earned an honorable mention for MAWPC Rookie of the Week. Wheeler had four goals and three assists this weekend, but what stood out the most was his defense as he racked up 12 steals.Â
