Buff & Blue begin campaign with four straight home contests
WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer kicks off its 2022 season with two home games this weekend at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Buff & Blue will entertain William & Mary on Thursday at 1 p.m. before hosting Manhattan for a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
WELCOME BACK: Anchored by Preseason All-Conference goalkeeper Justin Grady, GW returns 16 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad that finished 5-10-2 (3-4-1 A-10). Grady recorded 59 saves and notched a pair of shutouts last year after an All-Conference campaign in the Spring of 2021.
Oscar Haynes Brown, a three-time All-Conference honoree, is back to headline the Buff & Blue attack. Haynes Brown led GW with nine goals and 19 points a year ago, scoring the game-winning goal in four of GW's five wins. He entered the season ranked seventh on the program's all-time goals list (31) and ninth in career points (68).
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: GW welcomes seven newcomers to this year's squad, including three transfers in Conor Stephens (Winthrop), Jared DeMott (Cal State San Marcos) and Lucas Matuszewski (Pittsburgh). Additionally, four first-years - Connor Braun, Max Delyfer, Alex Nicholson and Keni Winger - will vie for playing time on the pitch this season.
ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY: The Tribe were projected to finish seventh in the preseason CAA poll following a 7-7 (4-4 CAA) campaign a year ago. Senior forward Alexander Levengood is coming off an All-Conference season in 2021, leading W&M with seven goals. He was named to the CAA Preseason All-Conference team this year along with senior Diba Newgbo, who totaled 12 points on four goals and four assists last year.
ABOUT MANHATTAN: The Jaspers went 6-9-2 (4-5-1 MAAC) a year ago and are slotted eighth in the conference's preseason poll this year. Manhattan primarily features a new cast of characters with 18 additions to the program's roster from 2021. Offensively, John Velez is the team's top returning scorer after potting five goals and two assists last season. The Jaspers will open their season on Thursday vs. Holy Cross before traveling to the District.
