Divers sweep Performer of the Week honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After a fantastic weekend on the boards at JMU's Duke Dog Invitational, GW divers Spencer Bystrom and Jamie Doak have swept the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week awards.
In addition, swimmer Barbara Schaal was tabbed the conference's Rookie Performer of the Week on Tuesday in recognition of a shining collegiate debut at Virginia's Cavalier Invitational.
Bystrom swept the boards at JMU, punching his ticket to the NCAA Zones meet in both events. The junior from Beachwood, Ohio, won 1-meter on Saturday while posting a career-best score of 300.70, and he was in top form again Sunday, winning 3-meter with another career-best mark of 325.85.
It's the first A-10 weekly award for Bystrom, who claimed bronze on 3-meter at the A-10 meet last season.
Already qualified for the NCAA regional meet, Doak finished third on both boards, hitting the Zones qualifying standard in both events. She posted a finals score of 282.75 on 3-meter on Saturday before following up with a score of 275.55 on 1-meter Sunday.
Doak collected her first conference weekly honor in her final tune-up before the A-10 meet.
A midseason addition to the program, Schaal made an immediate splash in registering a pair of swims that rank among the program's all-time top 10. The newcomer from Heidelburg, Germany posted a 100 back time of 54.81 seconds that ranks No. 2 in program history and a 100 fly time of 55.60 seconds that checks in at No. 7 all-time. Both performances were the fastest for the program this season and rank among the top five in the conference.
Schaal is the sixth different GW rookie to claim the award this season, joining Dara Reyblat, Bode Ringenbach, Connor Rodgers, Molly Smyers and Philip Moldovanu.
The Buff and Blue head to the A-10 Championships next week with the action running Feb. 16-19 at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
