Awards coming off strong performances at the Big Al Invitational
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After picking up critical points in GW's third-place finish at the Big Al Invitational, sophomore Barbara Schaal and first-year Phoebe Wright have swept the A-10 women's weekly awards and have been named GW's Student-Athletes of the Week. Schaal has been tabbed the A-10 Performer of the Week, and Wright was named the A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week, per the league on Tuesday.

For Schaal, the awards come after setting a personal best (53.87) in her 100-yard backstroke victory and tying a school record (3:40.52) as a member of the 400-yard medley relay. Schaal was already second in program history in the 100-yard backstroke, and remains second with an improved time. Schaal accompanied her record performances by taking second place in both the 50-yard freestyle B-final (23.17) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:21.50).

Wright, who was also a member of the record-tying 400-yard medley relay team, had a successful weekend in both individual events and relays. Along with tying the 400-yard medley relay record, Wright had the third-fastest time in program history in the 200-yard freestyle after capturing third place (1:48.65) in the A-final, and she finished in seventh place (55.33) in the 100-yard backstroke A-final. Wright was also a member of two second place relay finishes, in both the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:23.46) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:21.50).
