Swimming and Diving Enjoys Big Night at Big Al Invitational

Matic and Schaal led the way for the Buff and Blue
PRINCETON, N.J. - Djurdje Matic and Barbara Schaal each captured victories as GW swimming and diving marched through the second day of the Big Al Invitational with contributions all around.
In the team standings, the women held their place in third (453.5) behind Princeton (791.5) and Utah (653.5) and ahead of Denver (434.5), CSU Bakersfield (182) and Columbia (51), while the men remained in fourth (322) behind Princeton (848.5), Utah (550.5) and Columbia (458) but ahead of Denver (252) and CSU Bakersfield (222).

Sophomores Moriah Freitas, Ava DeAngelis, Schaal, and first-year Phoebe Wright tied a school record in the 400-yard medley relay (3:40.52) last night. They did so while getting fourth place in the relay final by just under 1.5 seconds. It ties a record that was originally set last spring when Schaal and DeAngelis were joined by Marlee Rickert and Julia Knox.
Men's Highlights:

Djurdje Matic cruised to first-place finishes in both the prelims and finals of the 100-yard butterfly. Matic's fastest time came in the prelim (46.56), which was just .04 off his personal best, also a program record.

In the 200-yard medley relay final, Karol Mlynarczyk, Tyler Kawakami, Ganesh Sivaramakrishnan and Matic combined for a third-place finish (1:27.11).

Marek Osina and Connor Rodgers finished first (3:51.29) and second (3:52:51) in the 400-yard IM B-Final. Osina took first, while Rodgers nabbed second and took down his personal best by more than 2.5 seconds.

Mlynarczyk finished third (47.34), and Sivaramakrishnan took sixth (47.86) in the 100-yard backstroke A-final. Ryan Patterson also finished second (48.74) in the B-final after missing the A-final by one spot.
Women's Highlights:

Schaal captured first place (53.87) and set a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke A-final, which came after placing second (53.92) in the prelims. Schaal's personal best entering competition was 54.00, which she surpassed twice today. Wright also placed seventh (55.33) in the A-final and moved into sixth in the Buff and Blue record book.

Siena Senn and Wright each made their way into the program's top-ten 200-yard freestyle times. Swimming in the A-final, Wright finished third (1:48.65) which was the third fastest in program history, while Senn finished fifth (1:49.47) which was sixth fastest in program history.

Freitas placed second (54.22) in the 100-yard butterfly A-final, missing first place by just .21 seconds. It's a personal best for Freitas and only .24 away from the program record.

Knox and Molly Smyers finished in fifth (4:19.80) and seventh (4:23.92) in the 400-yard IM A-final, respectively.

DeAngelis finished second (1:02.48) in the 100-yard breaststroke B-final and was just .42 off her personal best.

In the 1-meter dive A-final, Olivia Paquette finished fifth (255.20) and Dara Reyblat sixth (248.25).

Rickert took first (54.97) and Abby Clark took third (55.38) In the 100-yard backstroke B-final. Clark jumped into seventh in the program's top-ten, while Rickert continues to hold the record (53.58).

GW took second place (7:23.46) in the 800-yard freestyle relay to close out the night. Taylor Bernosky, Knox, Senn, and Wright finished only behind Princeton's A-relay.
