Four different Colonials score in double figures on Friday
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – George Washington women's basketball continued its early season offensive success, putting together a dominant wire-to-wire win over East Tennessee State University in game one of the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday.
Despite a five-day layoff, GW showed zero rust at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Colonials opened the contest on a 12-0 run and fired a mighty 60 percent from the field in the opening stanza, including sinking five triples.
While GW's shooting would cool down a bit in the second quarter, its defense helped keep ETSU at bay, holding them to just four field goals and a 20 percent shooting clip. The complete first half effort staked GW to a 37-28 lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same for George Washington. GDUB assaulted the Buccaneers' defense with another 60 percent shooting frame in the third quarter, before eventually wrapping up the 78-58 victory in the fourth.
Individually, four different GW players scored in double figures on Friday. Mia Lakstigala led all scorers with 19 points, her sixth straight double-digit scoring game to begin this year. Meanwhile, Essence Brown scored a career-high 18 points, Jayla Thornton chipped in a GW career-high 14, and Nya Robertson tallied 12 points.
As a team, GW sunk a season-high 15 threes against the Buccaneers on Friday afternoon.
Following its win, GW will now advance and face host UNLV on Saturday. Tip-off from Las Vegas is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST.
