Mia Lakstigala records seventh-straight double-digit performance
LAS VEGAS, Nev.– George Washington women's basketball gave the UNLV Lady Rebels all they could handle on their home court, but the defending Mountain West champions were able to defend the Thomas & Mack Center and pull out a win in the semifinals of the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament, 73-63.
While GDUB was able to go punch for punch with the Lady Rebels throughout the contest, the Colonials did get off to a rocky start in Saturday's first quarter, shooting just 4-for-14. GW would right itself in the second frame, sinking five triples and ending the half on a 16-7 run to make it a 37-34 game.
In the third stanza, both GW and UNLV's offenses traded buckets at a nearly identical clip, with George Washington holding a slight 7-for-16 edge to the Lady Rebels' 6-for-15 mark. However, while UNLV's defense allowed GW to tie the game twice in the second half, it never gave up the lead and pocketed the victory in the fourth quarter.
As a team, the Lady Rebels were aided by a massive 30 free-throw chances to GW's 13. UNLV also created scoring chances by moving the ball, holding a 16-6 assist advantage on Saturday.
Individually, Essence Brown led all GW scorers with 15 points, while Mia Lakstigala logged 11 points for her seventh straight double-digit game to begin the year.
Up next, George Washington will play in the third-place game of the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament. Tip-off from the tournament's finale will be on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. EST.
