GW moves to 6-1 in MAWPC action
BRONX, N.Y. - GW water polo (16-2, 6-1) wrapped up two MAWPC games on Saturday in the Bronx, falling to #18 Fordham, 16-7, before beating Wagner, 11-8. GW moves to 16-2 on the season and 6-1 in MAWPC action.
The loss to Fordham snapped the Colonials 15-game win streak. It's the longest win streak on record for GW men's water polo, and the first time the Colonials have lost since the opening game of the season.
#18 Fordham 16, #19 GW 7:
GW hopped out to an early 3-1 lead against the Rams with goals from Andrija Sekulic, Theodoros Pateros and DJ Davis. Fordham struck back with a 4-0 second-quarter run and went into halftime holding an 8-5 advantage. In the third quarter, Fordham gained separation by holding GW scoreless and putting up four of its own. The Rams found ways to quiet GW's normally high-powered offense, only allowing two goals in the second half, which was enough to take down the Colonials, 16-7.
#19 GW 11, Wagner 8:
Henry Maas and Pateros scored two quick goals to open the game against the Seahawks, and GW found itself leading, 3-2, after one quarter. The Colonials got the scoring going again in the second quarter, with goals from Ford Bruggen and Michael Wheeler to bring a 6-4 GW lead into the half.
Wagner struck first in the third quarter, but goals from Mateus Stellet and Bruggen opened a three-goal GW advantage, which it carried into the fourth quarter. The Seahawks drew and converted on a penalty shot to open the fourth, which brought them back within two goals, but with just under three minutes to play, Nick Schroeder powered home a shot from distance to push the lead back to three, where it would stay until the final buzzer.
Up Next:
GW heads to the west coast for a four-game road trip next weekend. The Buff and Blue will face Fresno Pacific on Friday, San Jose State and California Baptist on Saturday and Cal on Sunday.
