Three Colonials score double digits in the effort
NEW YORK - George Washington traveled to New York City on Wednesday night looking for a chance to take home their first A-10 win of the season against Fordham. While the Colonials put forth a strong 40-minute effort against the Rams, the firepower of the conference's leading scorer, Anna DeWolfe, proved too much for the Colonials in the 61-53 defeat.
Wednesday's game opened up with GW making four of their first five shots at Rose Hill Gym and going pound-for-pound with their A-10 rivals. However, the tide began to turn in favor of Fordham when the Buff & Blue fell into a first-half scoring drought that lasted almost 10 minutes and allowed the Rams to build a 28-14 lead. For GW, the end of the second quarter proved valuable, as they closed out on a 12-2 run that closed the gap to 30-26.
In the second half, the Colonials and Rams continued their back-and-forth battle, but it was DeWolfe who ultimately made the difference, as the Preseason First Team selection scored 21 points on the night, including 12 in the final two quarters for Fordham.
Offensively, the Colonials had three double-digit scorers on Wednesday. Nya Lok and Sheslanie Laureano each scored 11, while Mayowa Taiwo chipped in 10.
George Washington will now return home to the Charles E. Smith Center for a date with Massachusetts on Saturday. Tip-off against the Minutewomen will be at 2 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+
