Buff & Blue improved to 2-0 at home
WASHINGTON - Aaron Kronenberg and Oscar Haynes Brown provided the offense Tuesday afternoon to send GW men's soccer to a 2-1 win over Liberty on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue netted the game's first two goals and then held on down the stretch after the Flames got on the board in the 81st minute to improve to 2-0 on home turf this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 40th Minute: GW executed a fantastic corner kick to take the lead. Tobias Williams' service found Liam Emson's head, and the junior forward directed the ball in front for Kronenberg to slam home with a header of his own. (GW 1, Liberty 0)
- 48th Minute: Elias Norris streaked down the left side and then cut toward goal between defenders before sliding a cross in front that Haynes Brown flicked into the net for his third goal of the season. (GW 2, Liberty 0)
- 81st Minute: Liberty halved GW's lead on a long-range shot from Noah Holmes. (GW 2, Liberty 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- A sophomore defender, Kronenberg scored his first career goal. His tough-nosed defending from the center back position, especially late with Liberty chasing the equalizer, helped the Buff and Blue secure the victory.
- Haynes Brown has scored all three of his goals this season at The Vern. The graduate student from London, England, now has 25 career goals.
- Norris picked up his second assist of the season, while Emson and Williams each notched their first helpers of the campaign.
- Justin Grady equaled a season high with four saves. The junior keeper did not have to make any stops after the Flames scored, but he and the defense did have to fend off three corner kicks in the closing minutes.
- GW outshot Liberty 16-11 on the day and totaled seven attempts on net.
- The Buff and Blue are unbeaten in their last eight home contests (7-0-1) at The Vern, dating back to the 2019 season.
UP NEXT: GW is back on home turf Friday, welcoming Navy for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
