WASHINGTON - GW women's soccer kicks off its Fall 2021 home campaign on Thursday welcoming UNCG to the Mount Vernon Soccer Field for a 5:30 p.m. kick. The Buff & Blue will then head to Charlottesville, Va., for a 2 p.m. kick on Sunday at #3 Virginia.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: GW went 0-1-1 in its first week of action by taking on league preseason favorites Elon and Navy. After falling to the Phoenix, 2-0, the Buff & Blue bounced back to earn a 2-2 draw against the Midshipmen on Sunday. Kelly Amador and Sammy Neyman recorded the markers for GW on Sunday.
A LONG TIME COMING: Neyman's goal at Navy was the first of her career, coming in her 46th cap in her fourth year between GW and Miami. The North Andover, Mass., native fired five shots on the day, nearly equalling her total of eight from 11 games a year ago.
STAYING BUSY: Tamaki Machi has played all 200 minutes in net for the Buff & Blue thus far, registering 14 saves in the two games. Through one week, Machi leads the league in total saves and saves per game (7.0), a season after finishing second in the A-10 with 57 saves.
ABOUT UNCG: The Spartans are 1-0-1 on the year after topping Elon, 1-0, and drawing with High Point, 0-0. Senior goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week after facing 38 shots and making 13 saves in consecutive clean sheets.
UNCG was projected to finish fifth in the SoCon this year after going 4-5-2 in the spring season.
ABOUT VIRGINIA: The Cavaliers moved up to #3 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week following their season-opening wins over Richmond (8-0) and at #12 West Virginia (1-0). Three members of the squad - Lia Godfrey, Haley Hopkins and Alexa Spaanstra - were named to the preseason MAC Hermann Trophy watch list.
After making the College Cup in the spring, UVA was projected to finish third in the ACC behind the current top two teams in the country - Florida State and North Carolina. The 'Hoos will visit George Mason on Thursday before battling GW.
