Men's Soccer Blasts Davidson in Regular Season Finale

Buff & Blue explode for season-high four goals in victory
DAVIDSON, N.C. - In a high-stakes regular season finale, GW men's soccer earned a 4-1 win over Davidson on Saturday at Alumni Stadium to secure its place atop the Atlantic 10 Central Pod.
The Buff and Blue entered the day tied for the top spot in their group with the Wildcats, and they managed to create separation with a dominant effort on the road to improve to 3-1-2 (11 points) in conference play.
Oscar Haynes Brown scored twice, Tom Cooklin tallied a goal and two assists and Hrólfur Sveinsson also found the net as part of a season-best offensive effort.
Later Saturday, GW received its A-10 Championship draw with a first-round matchup vs. host Dayton on Thursday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 26th Minute: Haynes Brown started the scoring off an assist from Cooklin. (GW 1, Davidson 0)
- 43rd Minute: Following a weather delay, the Buff and Blue added on by converting a corner kick just before halftime. Sveinsson was able to put home Cooklin's service with a header for his first collegiate goal. (GW 2, Davidson 0)
- 51st Minute: Sandro Weber's pass freed Cooklin behind the defense for his first score of the season. (GW 3, Davidson 0)
- 57th Minute: Less than six minutes later, Haynes Brown scored again, this time assisted by first-year Tim Neumann. (GW 4, Davidson 0)
- 74th Minute: After another weather delay, Davidson was able to get on the board late with Connor Smith's header after a free kick by Henry Howell. (GW 4, Davidson 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- Haynes Brown recorded his fourth career multi-goal effort, and first since a 4-0 win over Saint Bonaventure on Oct. 10, 2018. That was also the last time the Buff and Blue scored four goals in a game.
- A senior from London, England, Haynes Brown has now scored in four of his six appearances this season, totaling a team-high five goals. He has 22 for his career.
- With his four points, Cooklin matched his career total entering the game. The sophomore from Lewes, England, leads the Buff and Blue this season with four assists.
- A key part of GW's backline, Sveinsson was able to convert his first shot on target of the season into his first score as a member of the Buff and Blue.
- Neumann picked up his third assist of the season and second vs. Davidson after setting up Weber's score in a 1-1 draw on the Mount Vernon Campus back on March 20.
- With his helper, Weber has six total points (two goals, two assists) to tie for second on the club with Cooklin.
- Justin Grady made three saves in the GW net before giving way in the final minutes to Duncan Wegner, who recorded one stop in his collegiate debut.
