Weber's goal helps Buff & Blue down host Dayton
DAYTON, Ohio - Sandro Weber's 54th-minute goal propelled GW men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Dayton on Thursday afternoon at Baujan Field to clinch a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship final.
The Buff and Blue relied on a familiar formula vs. the top-seeded Flyers, playing excellent defense while capitalizing offensively with Weber's header, assisted by Carter Humm and Tom Cooklin, early in the second half.
With the victory, GW advances to Saturday's A-10 final to face No. 3 Fordham, which defeated No. 2 Saint Louis, 2-1, later in the day. It's the first time the Colonials will play for a conference crown since 2011.
Justin Grady matched his career high with six saves in his fifth clean sheet of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 54th Minute: Off a restart, Cooklin sent a long ball into the box where it skipped off Humm's head and found Weber, who powered his own header past the Dayton keeper. (GW 1, Dayton 0)
- It was Weber's third goal of the season and second game-winner.
- Cooklin picked up his team-leading fifth assist of the season on the play.
- Humm tallied his first career point with his helper.
- GW's defense had to dig in down the stretch to hold off the Flyers. Grady made four of his six stops after the Buff and Blue took the lead. UD had its last chance in the final minute, but a shot from Jake Feiner sailed high.
- Dayton had a 16-9 edge in total shots, including 12-5 after halftime.
- Four of GW's five wins this season have come in 1-0 contests.
- It was GW's first victory at the A-10 Championship since their last final appearance in 2011. On Saturday, the Buff and Blue will look to secure their first conference tournament title since 2004 and third overall.
Saturday's A-10 Championship final will kickoff at 12 p.m. with the action broadcast via ESPN+.
