Lacrosse Defeats George Mason in Conference Opener

Ioanna Mantzouratos netted four goals in the victory
WASHINGTON -Â The GW lacrosse team opened up conference play on Saturday with a 17-10 win over Revolutionary Rival, George Mason.Â
After trailing 6-4 at halftime, GW's dominant 13-goal second-half effort helped the Buff and Blue secure the seven-goal victory.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Catie Perkins and Kendall Lambert were able to strike first for GW, both scoring in the fifth minute of play, giving GW an early 2-0 advantage. The Patriots responded with a pair of goals until Ioanna Mantzouratos netted her first of the game, putting GW back on top, 3-2. George Mason went on to score four unanswered in 10 minutes to take a 6-3 lead. Sophia Watkinson scored to cut the Patriot lead to two heading into halftime.Â
It was all GW for the first six minutes of the second half, sending four to the back of the net; a pair from Mantzouratos and one apiece from Alana Greene and Amber Germer.Â
George Mason's Erin Donoghue put an end to GW's scoring run, but GW responded, finding the back of the net four more times. Greene, Perkins, Mantzouratos and Katelyn Walker helped give the Buff and Blue a 12-7 lead.Â
The Patriots' Deanna Balsama rattled off two in a row, followed by teammate Christina Romano, cutting GW's lead to two.Â
GW never let the Patriots get any closer, closing out the second half with five more goals to earn the 17-10 victory.Â
