Cheltenham, UK native will serve as the team leader
WASHINGTON- Paddy George has been named captain of the GW men's rowing team for the 2021 season, head coach Eric Gehrke has announced.
"Paddy is an ideal captain, especially during this pandemic. He is committed to the daily process, thoughtful in his relationships with peers and coaches, and is driven to leave our program in a position to be successful on the water and within the GW community," Gehrke said.
"We are lucky to have him continue the strong legacy of leadership that his predecessors created, and we know he will leave the same expectation for the captains that will follow him."
In 2019, George rowed the three seat of the varsity eight that placed fifth (6:34.924) in the Petite Final at Eastern Sprints to qualify for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship. At the IRAs, George helped lead the varsity 8 to a first place finish (5:48.910) in the Third Level Final to give GW its highest ranking in program history.
"I am really grateful to be given the opportunity to captain this team, even under the given circumstances," said George. "This year I want to help my teammates through what continues to be a strenuous time, and keep our heads high in our final season as a varsity team."
"While for us challenges keep growing, we are confident in our ability to persevere. With the help of my team we have started planning the future of GW Men's Rowing as a club program and are putting in the groundwork to make sure that this is not the end of men's rowing at the George Washington University."
Men's rowing's full 2021 schedule will be released at a later date. Â
