Near historic rebounding day helps lead GDub to victory
WASHINGTON- GW women's basketball entered Tuesday evening with a chance to close out its non-conference slate on a high note, and they did not disappoint. Thanks to an all-around team effort, GW dismantled West Chester at home, 64-31, claiming victory in their final game of 2021, and the last contest before A-10 play begins on Saturday.
For the Colonials, it was a wire-to-wire win with Faith Blethen opening up the scoring on the Colonials' initial possession, and four quarters later, GW ended with the lead. While GW's offense may have helped contribute to the win, the real star of the show was the Buff & Blue's rebounding efforts, which resulted in 67 boards, just two off the team record of 69 set back in 1990.
Taylor Webster led the way with 13 rebounds and finished just three points shy of a double-double, while 11 other players recorded at least one rebound against the Golden Rams.
Offensively, GW had 11 scorers put the ball through the hoop Tuesday night, leading to the team's highest point total of the season. The team's 33-point margin of victory was the highest since defeating George Mason by 29 last February, and it marks the first time that the Colonials have won a game by at least 30 points since they defeated George Mason by 31 on February 18, 2017.
Defensively GW continued to shine, holding West Chester to just 22 percent shooting, including just 11 points in the second half, along with 13 steals and 17 points off turnovers.
With Caroline McCombs' first non-conference slate at GW in the books, she'll get the team ready for a New Year's Day turnaround, as GW will host Saint Louis in its A-10 opener. Tip-off from the Smith Center is slated for 2 p.m. on January 1 with coverage available on ESPN+.
