ANNAPOLIS, Md. - GW men's water polo rallied to force overtime on Viktor Jovanovic's buzzer-beater at the end of regulation before falling to Navy, 12-9, in an entertaining Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference battle on Thursday evening at Lejeune Hall.
The Buff and Blue trailed most of the final three quarters before battling back to force extra time by scoring the final three goals of regulation. Jovanovic's clutch tally came on the power play just before the final horn to tie it at 9.
In the extra time, GW was outscored by Navy, 3-0, across the two three-minute periods. The Midshipmen netted two tallies in the first OT and another in the game's closing seconds.
Luca Castorina was sensational in the GW net, setting a program record with 24 saves to keep the visitors within reach.Â
The sophomore goalkeeper held the Midshipmen scoreless over the final 5:49 of regulation while the Buff and Blue put together their comeback. He eclipsed the previous single-game mark of 21 stops set by Matt Taylor at the 2019 MAWPC Championship.
