Colonials to play three games in three days against strong mid-major field
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball is set to take part in the inaugural Naples Invitational this week, beginning on Monday with the opening game against Wright State at 2:30 p.m. The field also includes East Tennessee State, James Madison, Kent State, Long Beach State, Missouri State and Murray State.
FOLLOW ALONG: All the week's action from the Moe Kent Family Fieldhouse in Naples will be streamed live on FloHoops. Live stats will also be provided. GW will play at either noon or 5 p.m. on Tuesday pending the result of Monday's contest.
A NEEDED SPARK: Brayon Freeman provided a jolt of energy on Friday vs. UMass Lowell, scoring 13 points in just 18 minutes of action while shooting an efficient 5-of-6 from the floor. Freeman also knocked down his first career long ball in the process. The D.C. native became the first Colonial rookie to reach double figures off the bench since Tyler Brelsford had 11 points in 26 minutes at George Mason on Feb. 24 last season.
HE'S HEATING UP: After a relatively slow start to the campaign, junior James Bishop has found the scoring knack, averaging 18.5 ppg over his last two contests. Bishop enters play Monday leading the A-10, and ranking in the top 20 in the NCAA, in total FG attempts and 3-point attempts.
A LOOK AT THE RAIDERS: Wright State is 1-2 on the year following after consecutive losses at Marshall (96-88) and #6 Purdue (96-52). The Raiders have won at least 18 games each of the last five seasons and have qualified for one NCAA Tournament and two NITs. Wright State is led by Tanner Holden, who has averaged 20.3 ppg through the season's first three contests.
Analytically, WSU holds the seventh-fastest tempo and fourth-quickest defensive possession length in the country per KenPom.
HISTORY IN MTEs: GW is appearing in its first multi-team event since the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase, where it went 2-1 with wins over Evansville and Milwaukee. The Buff & Blue are looking for their first MTE title since winning the 2014 Diamond Head Classic with triumphs over Ohio, Colorado and #11 Wichita State. The Colonials own a 3-4 record on neutral floors under Coach Christian.
