River Hawks outscore GW 41-21 in second half to claim win
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball built a 12-point first-half lead, only to see the visiting UMass Lowell River Hawks storm back to take a 67-56 win at the Smith Center Friday night.
Trailing 35-26 at intermission, UMass Lowell set the tone for the second 20 minutes with back-to-back dunks in the opening minute. The River Hawks ultimately tied the game at 39 and took the lead for good with just over 10 minutes remaining.
GW was within three (54-51) with five minutes remaining but went nearly four minutes before their next basket.
GW's offensive woes continued as the Colonials shot just 32.6% from the floor, including 8-of-28 (28.6%) after halftime. The Buff & Blue made five of their first seven 3-point attempts, but missed all six after halftime.
Things were looking good for GW in the opening stanza as a 19-2 run, punctuated by a quartet of 3-pointers, gave the Colonials a 19-12 edge. GW extended its lead to as many as 12 (33-21) in the first half.
James Bishop paced GW with 18 points, five rebounds and two assists. Joe Bamisile notched his first career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while first-year Brayon Freeman registered his first double-digit effort with 13 points on an efficient 5-of-6 showing from the field.
Max Brooks had 23 to lead the River Hawks, who knocked off their second A-10 opponent of the season after winning at Dayton last week. UML shot 55% in the second half and 44% for the game.
The Colonials are back in action on Monday for the opening game of the Naples Invitational vs. Wright State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
