Junior guard earns preseason accolade after sensational sophomore year
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW men's basketball junior James Bishop, the Atlantic 10's leading returning scorer, was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team, it was announced on Wednesday. He is the first Colonial representative on the Preseason All-Conference first or second team since Tyler Cavanaugh earned the distinction prior to the 2016-17 campaign.
"James is one of the most underrated players in the country," said head coach Jamion Christian. "The way he leads our team on a daily basis and how he has created a cultural change within our program has been really special. In James' time, he will receive many awards. This the first of many. But one thing I know for certain is he will earn every one of them because he believes in the work and leads that way daily."
In his debut campaign with GW, Bishop averaged 19.1 points per game, finishing second in the league. In the process, he became the first Colonial to average at least 19 points per game in a season since all-time leading scorer Chris Monroe averaged 20.2 ppg in 2002-03. Bishop was also the first GW player since Monroe that year to finish in the top two in the A-10 in scoring.
The Baltimore, Md., native also dished out 5.1 assists per contest in 2020-21, ranking fourth in the A-10 and 43rd nationally. The southpaw sensation posted multiple assists in every game, including a career-high nine on a pair of occasions.
GW hits the floor for the first time on Monday, Nov. 1 for an exhibition vs. Hood College at 6:30 p.m. The season officially opens on Tuesday, Nov. 9 vs. Saint Francis at 8 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's basketball program.
