Colonials shift focus to conference play
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – On Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va., the George Washington lacrosse team fell to William & Mary, 19-17, at Martin Family Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
William & Mary got a hot start to their day with four straight goals in the opening three minutes of play before the Colonials were able to get on the board with a goal from Tori Hampton. The Tribe fired back with a goal of their own, before Katie Quinn found the back of the net at the 21:49 mark to bring the squad within three. The Tribe added two more tallies to their total, but GW bounced back with a trio of their own. The two teams continued to trade goals, with William & Mary leading 11-7 going into the break.
The second half saw lots of back-and-forth, with the Colonials coming within four at the 11:37 mark. Quinn sparked GW's second half surge with four straight goals to bring the team within one, but the Tribe found the back of the net with 1:09 on the clock to punctuate their 19-17 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• GW held an advantage in ground balls (26-24) while the Tribe held an edge in shots (31-26) and draw controls (24-14).
• Katie Quinn and Christine Weber paced the team with a career-high five goals each, while Tori Hampton followed closely behind with four. Kendall Lambert, Caroline Kiernan, and Cora Brodhurst tallied one goal each.
• Catie Perkins finished her day with a pair of assists to top the team. Lambert, McDonnell, and Germer posted one assist each.
• Caroline Esmond topped the team off the draw with five.
• Megan Patrick finished her day with 12 saves.
ROAD AHEAD: GW is set to open Atlantic 10 action against Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Sunday, March 20 at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
