Pair honored for play at Bucknell Invitational
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington's Alana Ponce and Mackenzie Matheny were honored by the Collegiate Water Polo Association on Tuesday after helping the Colonials to a winning weekend at the Bucknell Invitational.
Ponce was named the conference's Player of the Week, while Matheny collected Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Ponce sparked the Colonials to three wins in four games at Kinney Natatorium, piling up 13 goals and six assists with five field blocks, five steals and seven ejections drawn. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native found the net four times in Saturday's 12-10 win over Salem University and later repeated the feat vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) to help the Buff and Blue complete the doubleheader sweep. She tallied three goals and three assists in a 12-5 victory over Gannon on Sunday to close the weekend.
It's the second CWPA Player of the Week award for Ponce, who was previously honored as a first-year on Feb. 15, 2018. Through eight games, she leads the Colonials in goals (32), points (42), field blocks (13), steals (10) and ejections drawn (16).
Matheny put together a solid run between the pipes at Bucknell, compiling a .522 save percentage with 35 stops vs. 32 goals allowed. The first-year from Australia tallied exactly nine saves in all three Buff and Blue wins on the weekend. She also chipped in the first two assists of her career.
Matheny anchored a defense that got stronger as the weekend progressed. She ceded just six goals to Saint Francis on Saturday night and then limited Gannon to five scores in Sunday's finale.
For the season, Matheny has stopped 48.6% of the shots she's faced with 70 total saves.
GW is back in action this weekend for three games at the Princeton Invitational. The Colonials open play at DeNunzio Pool on Saturday with a doubleheader vs. LIU (2:30 p.m.) and No. 20 Wagner (7 p.m.).
