Alana Ponce tallied 10 goals in doubleheader
PHILADELPHIA - Alana Ponce totaled 10 goals on the day, but GW women's water polo dropped both ends of Saturday's season-opening doubleheader.
The Colonials started the day with a 12-10 loss at La Salle before falling to Villanova, 13-11, in the nightcap.
An All-CWPA First Team pick in 2019, Ponce launched her junior season off to a strong start, tallying five scores in each game to pace the Colonials' attack.
La Salle 12, GW 10: The Explorers burst out to a 4-0 advantage in the opener and led the rest of the way in their home pool.
After trailing by five goals at halftime, the Colonials surged back with four straight goals out of the break to get within 8-7 on a goal by Ponce with 5:34 left in the third.
That was as close as the Buff and Blue would get as La Salle answered back with three consecutive goals to restore the cushion and ultimately claim victory.
In addition to her five goals, Ponce added three field blocks, two steals and an assist.
Making their debuts in Buff and Blue, newcomers Amanda Reeder and Marina Daroca Bazán netted two goals apiece. Juliette Belanger also scored vs. the Explorers, and Allison DeCicco chipped in a team-high three assists.
Rookie netminder Mackenzie Matheny tallied five saves in her first collegiate game.
Villanova 13, GW 11: The Colonials surged late, nearly completing the comeback vs. the Wildcats.
Villanova broke open a tight game with a 5-1 edge in the third quarter before GW started working its way back.
After falling behind 13-7 in the final minute of the third, the Colonials scored the game's final four goals. Kira Bruno's tally with 42 seconds remaining trimmed the deficit to two, but that turned out to be the final margin.
Ponce scored two of her team-high five goals in the final period, while Bruno netted two of her three goals over the final eight minutes.
Megan Tomasi and Hannah Hathaway both scored for the first time this season in the nightcap with Hathaway also chipping in three assists and two steals.
Matheny was strong in net with a dozen stops, including a pair of saves on five-meter penalty shots.
UP NEXT: GW closes the weekend with another doubleheader Sunday at La Salle. The Colonials face Salem University at 9 a.m. before taking on St. Francis Brooklyn at 1 p.m.
