Colonials begin new season on Feb. 1
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's water polo revealed its 2020 schedule Friday, highlighted by a March trip to California and a Collegiate Water Polo Association matchup vs. Princeton at Smith Center Pool.
The Colonials, led by All-CWPA First Team pick Alana Ponce, return five of their top six scorers from a year ago. The road begins Feb. 1 with a split doubleheader at La Salle and Villanova to kick off a 23-game regular season.
"This is a schedule that will test our group from start to finish," said head coach Barry King, who enters his third season directing the Buff and Blue. "As we open the season, I'm excited to see how our group will respond to the challenge and grow along the way. Our goal, as always, is to be playing our best at the CWPA Championship."
After playing four games over two days in Philadelphia to open the season, GW has tournaments on tap at Bucknell (Feb. 7-9) and Princeton (Feb. 15-16).
The Colonials then host their CWPA opener on Feb. 29, welcoming Princeton for a noon start on Senior Day at Smith Center Pool.
The Buff and Blue will spend spring break on the West Coast with six games over seven days. They will face Villanova, Long Beach State and San Diego State as part of the Aztec Invitational (March 14-15) before road contests at La Verne (March 17), Cal Baptist (March 19) and Cal State Northridge (March 20).
The regular season closes with two weekends of CWPA play. GW faces Brown and St. Francis (Pa.) at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool on April 4-5 before heading to Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on April 10-11 for matchups with Bucknell, four-time defending conference champion Michigan and Harvard.
The CWPA Championship will be held April 24-26 at Michigan's Canham Natatorium with all seven conference teams battling for an automatic NCAA berth.
