Men's Basketball Falls at Fordham

The George Washington men's basketball team traveled to the Bronx Wednesday for an A-10 tip against the Fordham Rams, looking to extend a two-game conference winning streak after defeating Massachusetts in Amherst on Saturday and earning a leg up in the Revolutionary Rivalry versus George Mason a week ago. They encountered a hungry bunch of Rams, however, and in an odd twist of fate dropped their fourth conference game of the season by exactly five points, 59-54.
The shots just weren't falling for the Colonials in New York as one of the country's best pure shooters, first-year Jamison Battle, found the Rose Hill Gym iron unkind in an unprecedented off night. Senior point guard Armel Potter led the way for GW with 15 points and six rebounds, while junior Buffalo-native Maceo Jack, in a return to the Empire State, netted 11 points to go along with four steals on the other end.
Fordham, conversely, found the home rims friendly, particularly from deep, as the Rams' 9-of-20 three-point effort was the differentiator. Jalen Cobb led all scorers with 22 points for the home team, 15 of which came from long range in a 5-of-7 shooting show from triple territory.
The Rams turned an early one-point game at 13-12 into a more significant deficit for GW to overcome after a 13-0 run spanning more than four minutes in the latter stages of the first. From there, the Colonials slowly dug out of the 14-point hole but ran out of time at the end.
A Battle three — marking his 19th straight game making a three-pointer — cut the Rams' lead to just three with :26 remaining in the game, capping a furious 7-point rally in less than :30 seconds after the Colonials found themselves down 10 with less than a minute to go. After a Shawn Walker Jr. steal, the Colonials missed on the equalizer, and Fordham put the game away at the line.
The Colonials saw exactly half of their man/minutes go to first-year student-athletes with rookies Battle (36), Jameer Nelson Jr. (33) and Chase Paar (27) all drawing starting nods, and Walker contributing four key minutes in the reserve role.
GW will look to regain its winning ways back home Saturday when Saint Joseph's comes to town for a 4 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
