Colonials nab first clean sheet of the season
KINGSTON, R.I. — The George Washington women's soccer team notched its fifth straight victory with a 2-0 shutout win over Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonials (7-1-2, 3-0 A-10) limited the Rams to just six shots on the day while rattling off 13 of their own and converting off two of them with goals by Rachel Sorkenn. With the victory, GW remains undefeated in conference play, earning its best start in Atlantic 10 action since 2015 when it went 10-0-0 en route to the regular season title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 7th Minute - The Colonials got on the board early with a goal from Rachel Sorkenn. GW 1, URI 0
• 70th Minute - Sorkenn struck again in the second half to pad GW's lead. The redshirt sophomore took a pass from Sammy Neyman, darted through the Rams' defense and went one-on-one with the keeper, shooting the ball into the open left side of the net. GW 2, URI 0
NOTEWORTHY
• The Buff and Blue back line had its best game of the season, limiting the Rams to just six shots and holding them scoreless. The victory marked GW's first clean sheet of the season.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi finished the day with three saves en route to her first shutout of her career.
• Sorkenn's pair of goals marks a single-game season high for the redshirt sophomore. She now ranks second on the team with 10 points (3g, 4a).
• The two squads were even with two corners apiece.
• After helping on a pair of goals against Fordham on Thursday, Neyman continued her momentum against the Rams with her third assist in two games.
ON DECK: The Colonials will continue A-10 action next week by hosting Massachusetts on Thursday at the GW Soccer Field at 3 p.m. before heading down to Richmond to face the Spiders on Sunday at 3 p.m.
