Max Holdsworth scored his third goal of the season
WASHINGTON - Max Holdsworth tallied his third goal of the season, but GW men's soccer fell to George Mason, 2-1, in a Saturday tilt on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After falling behind 2-0, the Colonials halved their deficit on Holdsworth's successful penalty kick in the 67th minute. They continued to pressure the Patriots but couldn't find the equalizer in the closing minutes of the Atlantic 10 contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 24th Minute: Ryan Mingachos scored the game's first goal, heading in a cross from Michael Diehl to put George Mason on top. (Mason 1, GW 0)
- 65th Minute: The Patriots extended their lead with Tunde Akinlosotu running onto a pass from Jackson Miles and finishing the breakaway. (Mason 2, GW 1)
- 67th Minute: GW answered right back with Holdsworth's penalty kick. Matt Sipowicz was taken down in the box to draw the attempt, and Holdsworth slotted his low shot inside the right post. (Mason 2, GW 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- Holdsworth is now 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season. The senior from England leads the Colonials with nine points on the fall.
- GW generated its share of offensive chances Saturday, outshooting George Mason, 20-5. The Colonials equaled a season-high shot total and put seven tries on target, including three after they pulled within 2-1.
- Justin Grady earned his seventh start of the season in net for the Colonials. The first-year netminder did his part to shut down several George Mason scoring chances but was not credited with any saves.
- Haukur Hilmarsson had an active afternoon, attempting a career-high six shots over 73 minutes.
