Men's Soccer Hosts Rhode Island in A-10 Opener

Colonials set to welcome alumni back to the Vern
GW men's soccer celebrates Colonials Weekend by welcoming Rhode Island to the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday to kick off Atlantic 10 play.
The fun begins with an alumni game at 1 p.m. followed by a pregame tailgate for former Colonials. (Register here.) The game pitting the Buff and Blue vs. the defending A-10 champion Rams starts at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Sandro Weber tallied his third goal in as many games on Tuesday, but GW fell to UMBC, 4-1, in non-conference action on the Vern.
The Retrievers scored two goals in each half to drop the Colonials to 2-3-1 on the season.
Liam Emson and Fares Tello both picked up their first career points by assisting on Weber's score in the 31st minute.
SANDRO'S SPARK: A graduate student from Germany, Weber scored his first career goal in a win at Liberty on Sept. 10 before finding the net vs. Brown last Saturday and then again Tuesday vs. UMBC.
After coming off the bench early in the season, Weber has made four straight starts in the midfield. The newcomer enters this weekend tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in goals and tied for fifth with six points. He also leads the Colonials in both shots (17) and shots on goal (11).
RISING ROOKIE: First-year goalkeeper Justin Grady was named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after posting shutouts vs. Liberty and Brown last week.
The Pennsylvania native has played all 560 minutes between the pipes for the Colonials thus far, notching 24 saves against nine goals allowed. He's recorded three clean sheets in all, which ranks second in the conference.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND: The Rams are 2-2-2 after a 1-1 draw at Central Connecticut State on Tuesday. They are unbeaten over their past three games.
Filippo Tamburini and Simon Trcka lead the squad with two goals apiece.
GW and Rhode Island last met in the 2017 A-10 Tournament with the Rams claiming a 1-0 victory on the Vern.
UP NEXT: GW heads to Villanova on Tuesday for a non-conference contest at 4 p.m. The Colonials return to the Vern next Saturday, Sept. 28, to host A-10 foe George Mason in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
