Men's Soccer Drops Opener at UNCG

Colonials kicked off fall Friday in N.C.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – In its 2019 season opener, GW men's soccer fell at UNC Greensboro, 2-0, on Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans tallied a pair of second-half goals six minutes apart and dealt the Colonials a defeat to kick off the fall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 62nd Minute: After a scoreless opening half, UNCG broke the deadlock with a score from Riley Copeland, who emerged from a scrum near the penalty spot to fire a shot inside the right post. (UNCG 1, GW 0)
- 68th Minute: The Spartans added on six minutes later off a set piece. Ethan Conley's long free kick found the head of Casey Penland for the goal. (UNCG 2, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- First-year Justin Grady started in net for the Buff and Blue and notched three saves in his collegiate debut.
- Fellow rookie Liam Emson was in the starting lineup at forward and accounted for three of GW's six shots on goal. The Colonials recorded 13 shots in all to UNCG's 14.
- Grady and Emson were among the eight newcomers to make their Buff and Blue debuts at UNCG. First-year Tom Cooklin also started for the Colonials, while first-years Carlyle Smart, Ryan Cedeno and Jin Kim and graduate students Sandro Weber and Matt Sipowicz saw action as reserves.
- GW's best scoring chance came in the 49th minute when Cooklin rocketed a shot on frame that forced the UNCG keeper to make a leaping save. Reese Moore had a quality look in the 34th minute with a long-range drive that deflected off the left post.
UP NEXT: GW is back in action Monday afternoon with a crosstown showdown at American. It's a 1 p.m. kickoff at Reeves Field.
