Several Colonials will be in action internationally in July
Smith Center Pool has been bustling with activity each weekday morning this summer with GW swimmers eyeing to build on the program's recent success in 2019-2020.
Over the next month, several Colonials are set to get a useful measure of their progress, testing themselves against international competition.
Up first, Emils Pone will represent his native Latvia at the World University Games, which will be held July 3-14 in Naples, Italy. The rising senior is set to swim five events: 100m back (July 4), 200m IM (July 5), 50m back (July 6), 200m back (July 8), 400m IM (July 10). Watch the action via the Olympic Channel and FISU TV or follow live results.
A three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, Pone already has his summer off to a flying start after claiming four gold medals at last month's Latvian Short Course Championship. He won the 50m back (:25.40), 100m back (:54.76) and 200m IM (2:00.89) before anchoring a win in the 400m medley relay for his BJSS Ridzene club.
Former Colonial Gustav Hokfelt will also be in action at the World University Games representing Sweden. He recently broke his own Swedish record in the 50m back by posting a time of 25.23 seconds at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome and also claimed a title in that event (:25.80) at the Swedish National Championships.
Gemma Atherley will be in action from July 6-12 representing her native Jersey at the Island Games in Gibraltar. The meet brings together athletes from island communities across the globe and is the first international competition for the rising senior since she set five national records at last year's Commonwealth Games in Australia. Follow along with live results here.
To cap the summer, Pone, Moritz Fath and Andrew Cho will compete at USA Swimming's Phillips 66 National Championship, which runs July 31 through Aug. 4 at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center. It's a chance to compete close to home for Cho, who hails from Palo Alto, Calif. More info on the meet is available here.
