Recent graduate will pursue master's degree at GW
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Recent George Washington swimming and diving graduate Emily Zhang has been named an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship winner, the conference announced on Thursday.
A three-time All A-10 performer, Zhang left her mark on the program with her excellence in and out of the pool. She was chosen by the conference after a selection process that considered athletic performance, academic achievement and involvement in the community.
Zhang is set to pursue a master's degree in Geography at GW through the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
"I am immensely grateful for this support from the Atlantic 10 Conference in helping me continue my studies in a field I love so much," Zhang said. "On top of that, it shows how invested the conference is in its student-athletes and their development, both in and out of sport."
Zhang totaled 16 A-10 Championship medals over her career, including seven at her final conference meet in February to help the Colonials place second to equal their best finish in program history and improve their positioning in the team standings for the fourth straight season.
In March, Zhang wrapped her decorated career in Buff and Blue in style by earning a silver medal in the 100-yard individual medley at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. She graduated holding three individual program records and five relay marks.
Zhang completed a double degree in International Affairs and Geography with a 3.52 cumulative GPA and was recognized for her work in the classroom as an A-10 All-Academic pick and CSCAA Scholar All-American. She was a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and stayed active in GW's SAAC and Leadership Academy.
Zhang's community service efforts included volunteering as a tutor at the Latino Student Fund, serving as an adaptive swim instructor for children with special needs and assisting in the GW Office of Sustainability's Colonial Composting program.
This year's class of 14 recipients features representatives of seven different sports. Each student-athlete will receive $5,000 toward continuing their education or professional program.
The other recipients include Justine Lyon (Davidson), Taylor Vernot (Dayton), Kirsten Hillsley (Duquesne), Amie Ko (Fordham), Emily Littell (George Mason), Madison Kuch (La Salle), Erin Doster (UMass), Nicole Petta (Rhode Island), Mia Castagnero (Richmond), Sam Fuller (St. Bonaventure), Rebecca Lane (Saint Joseph's), Colton Nettleton (Saint Louis) and Kelly Graves (VCU).
