Colonials honored by NCAA for continued academic success
The NCAA announced Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards today, recognizing teams across the country that finished with an APR in the top 10 percent in their sport.
GW's women's cross country, golf, gymnastics, softball, men's tennis, women's track, volleyball and women's water polo teams were honored.
"Our student-athletes strive day in and day out to be the best versions of themselves," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Tanya Vogel. "They are determined to succeed, committed to excellence, and respectful of the academic rigor at our institution. It is no surprise, and it's a credit to our educational support staff and coaches, that GW Athletics continues to be a positive display of academic excellence."
This continues a trend in which GW Athletics has seen at least six teams earn APR Public Recognition Awards in each of the last eight years.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I athletics teams across the country. It provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Today's announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
All Division I programs' APR scores will be released publicly on May 8.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
