Colonials battled host Brown on Sunday morning
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - George Washington women's water polo dueled host Brown in a defensive battle on Sunday morning at the CWPA Championship before falling, 7-5.
Alana Ponce and Juliette Belanger netted two goals apiece for the Colonials in their season finale at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Ponce was named to the All-CWPA Championship Second Team after totaling 10 points via seven goals and three assists over three games this weekend.
GW led 2-0 after the opening quarter on goals by Ponce and Jaleh Moaddeli, but Brown answered with two scores to tie it going into the halftime break and then went in front for good in the third period.
After Ponce tied the score at four with 3:22 left in the third, the Bears ran off three straight goals to assert control. Belanger found the net with 3:07 remaining in the game to pull GW within 7-5, but that turned out to be the final goal as the tournament hosts secured the victory.
In addition to her two goals, Ponce also tallied an assist, two steals, two field blocks and two ejections drawn. GW's first All-Conference First Team pick since 2013 closed her sophomore season with 48 goals and 64 points, both team highs.
With her two-goal effort, Belanger wrapped an impressive rookie campaign with 40 scores to rank second among Colonials.
