Colonials equal best finish at conference championships
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington women's swimming and diving closed the Atlantic 10 Championships in style Saturday, wrapping up a second-place finish with a gold medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay in program-record time.
The Colonials put together four solid days at the SPIRE Institute, dueling Duquesne down to the final race. The team of Emily Zhang, Caroline Racke, Rebecca Smolcic and Gemma Atherley won the meet-closing relay in 3:21.16, though the Buff and Blue finished runner-up to the Dukes.
Despite coming up a few points short, there was still plenty to feel good about for a group that improved its conference positioning for a fourth straight season and matched its best-ever team finish.
Under first-year head coach Brian Thomas, GW displayed its continued progress throughout the week, winning 13 total medals with six of them gold. The Colonials snapped a pair of A-10 records and five program marks in all.
Jackie Torrez was responsible for one of the A-10 records Saturday during prelims of the 200 fly when she touched in 1:58.37.
The junior from California shaved more than two seconds off her personal best with that swim before winning the evening final in 1:59.13 to take the first individual gold of her career. She had previously earned a silver in the 400-yard individual medley this week.
Andrea Moussier claimed individual gold, as well, to wrap up her first trip to the conference championships. The first-year from Mexico cruised to victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 16:40.96. She was followed in fourth by classmate Erin McCarthy, who dropped more than 30 seconds off her seed time.
Zhang also reached the medal stand as an individual Saturday by taking bronze in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.07 seconds. The senior from Maryland closed her final A-10 meet with seven medals, three as an individual and four via relays.
Atherley earned her own bronze, leading the Colonials in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.93. Isabel Berdecio (seventh) was behind her in the A final, while Andrea Ho (13th) and Lucy Castro (15th) made the B final.
Courtney Sicinski (seventh, 200 breast), Tali Lemcoff (ninth, 1,650 free), Racke (10th, 100 free) and Isabela Patino (15th 200 fly) also scored for the Colonials on Saturday.
On the diving side, GW picked up points on the final day from Rachel Dickinson (12th, 249.30) and Gabriella Arendes (13th, 246.55) on the 3-meter board.
