First-year honored after Toyota U.S. Open Championships
After an excellent weekend representing GW swimming and diving on the national stage, George Aspougalis has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. The first-year from Greece was honored after advancing to a pair of breaststroke finals at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships in Atlanta.
Last Friday, Aspougalis kicked off the meet at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center by finishing 38th in 100m breaststroke qualifying (1:03.32) before grabbing second that evening in the D final in 1:03.94. He wrapped up his stay in Georgia on Saturday by qualifying 45th in the 200m breaststroke (2:21.60) and then dropping more than two seconds off his prelim time to take sixth in the D final in 2:19.26.
For Aspougalis, the meet capped a tremendous fall to kick off his debut campaign. He was recognized after three of GW's six weeks of competition with two Rookie of the Week awards and a Performer of the Week honor.
Following winter break, Aspougalis heads into his first championship season already holding a pair of GW all-time top 10 times, ranking fourth in the 100-yard breastroke (:54.89) and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:59.74). He and the Colonials will next be in action Jan. 18 vs. Georgetown on Senior Day at Smith Center Pool.
