NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Washington men's basketball first-year Jamison Battle took home his first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award Monday after an impressive three games at the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase.
Battle reached double figures in all three games and recorded his first collegiate double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) in Sunday's finale win over Milwaukee.
"I am grateful for my teammates and how we responded this week," said Battle. "Without them, I wouldn't be in this position."
The newcomer from Minnesota dazzled from behind the arc, connecting on 10-of-14 3-point attempts, and played more than 30 minutes in all three games.
"I love coaching guys like Jamison who have a high passion to be elite," said head coach Jamion Christian. "His willingness to do whatever it takes for our team to be at its best early in the season has been remarkable. We are excited to use this milestone towards our ultimate goal."
In the showcase opener against Kansas City, Battle was one point shy of tying his season-best mark against Howard with 13 points. In the two GW wins, Battle averaged 11.5 points and nine rebounds and shot 70% from the field.
Not only were his offensive numbers impressive, but on the defensive end, Battle challenged around the rim and came down with 23 defensive rebounds.
Battle is the first Colonial under Christian to claim a weekly award.
GW will sit idle through the Thanksgiving break before returning for its next road contest at South Carolina on Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m. The game can be seen on SEC Network+ with live audio from Byron Kerr on TuneIn.
