Women’s Soccer Goes the Distance with VCU

Colonials play Rams to a draw, 2-2
RICHMOND, Va. – The George Washington women's soccer team battled VCU to a 2-2 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon.
After a late comeback goal off a penalty kick from Sofia Pavon to tie the score at two with seven minutes to play, GW had a pair of scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but could not find the back of the net as the Colonials went the distance with VCU with neither side tallying in the extra sessions.
The Colonials (10-1-3, 5-0-1 A-10) slip to second in the Atlantic 10, just behind Saint Louis, who sits at the top of the conference with a perfect 6-0-0 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 31st Minute -- The Rams were the first on the board with a team goal. VCU 1, GW 0
• 47th Minute – GW evened the scored early into the second half with a quick strike from Rachel Sorkenn. The goal marked her third tally in two games. GW 1, VCU 1
• 48th Minute – VCU was fast to respond, with Samantha Jerabek scoring off a breakaway. VCU 2, GW 1
• 83rd Minute – With just seven minutes left on the clock, the Colonials turned up the intensity and were able to draw a foul to force a penalty kick. Sofia Pavon took the PK and shot the ball just beyond the reach of the Rams' keeper to tie it up at two. GW 2, VCU 2
NOTEWORTHY
• After being held to five shots and trailing by one in the first half, the Colonials turned it up a notch in the second with 14 shots and two goals. GW finished the day with a 21-16 advantage.
• Maria Pareja paced the squad with five shots, four of which came on goal. Sorkenn followed closely behind with four of her own.
• Sorkenn's tally early in the second half marked her third goal in two games. The forward scored a pair of goals on Thursday at Delaware State.
• Tamaki Machi finished the day with seven saves. The Tokyo, Japan, native had her best stop in the final two minutes of the second overtime period, snatching a header off a Rams' corner kick.

The Colonials will make their return to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Thursday at 3 p.m. to take on Saint Joseph's before hosting St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
